One Square Meter Berber is a collaborative project between Moroccan female weavers and Dutch designers and artists. The project aims to preserve and sustain the ancient cultural heritage of the Amazigh weaving community.
One of the designs Studio Wieki Somers made with the female weavers from Marmucha (Middle Atlas) is the rug Open Letter.
Open letter, translated as an abstract letter, a manifest, stresses the off-balanced position of female weavers and stimulates to encourage them to become more independent: economically and creatively.
The pattern also refers to the dialoque during the making process, the result of two crossing cultures, and the weavers who live figuratively speaking in a bubble, on an island, isolated in many ways.
